Legislation
THE 2024 LEGISLATIVE SESSION OPENS FOR BUSINESS ON JANUARY 8, 2024. IT'S AN ELECTION YEAR, SO THIS USUALLY MEANS THAT THE SESSION WILL BE AS SHORT AS POSSIBLE (SO POLITICIANS CAN CAMPAIGN FOR RE-ELECTION) AND THAT NO RISKY, CONTROVERSIAL OR UNPOPULAR BILLS WILL PASS INTO LAW (WHICH USUALLY MEANS NO PROGRESSIVE PRISON OR SENTENCING REFORMS).
SO FAR, HERE ARE THE PRE-FILED BILLS; MANY MORE TO BE ADDED:
HB 2073: Proposes a newly updated criminal justice data collection system to be implemented by the Arizona Criminal Justice Commission.
HB 2054: Proposes that persons who are in compliances with terms of probation supervision who were convicted of an offense regarding a controlled substance WILL be eligible for SNAP (supplemental nutrition assistance program ) and compliance with probation will include any drug testing, as applicable.
HB 2047: Proposes that the ADCRR may grant a one-time extension of 90 days for an eligible inmate to continue to receive transition services if all of the provisions listed in the bill apply.
HB 2043: Proposes that the statute of limitations be greatly expanded for various circumstances as it applies to charging a person with a crime
HB 2082: Proposes to allow a "medical confinement release" to any prisoner except those serving natural life or death if a determination is made that the prisoner suffers from an incurable and incapacitating physical, mental or cognitive condition where a doctor believes that the prisoner has 1 year of less to live, is 75 years of age or older and is in irreversible deteriorating health due to advanced age, or other issues.
